The journal

I woke up gasping for air my first night in Cusco, cursing the altitude, then stepped outside to find the whole sky ablaze with stars over the plaza. An old woman was already sweeping her doorstep at dawn, unhurried, as if the Incas had simply stepped out for a moment. I never fully caught my breath there, in more ways than one.
