The journal

A longtail boat captain taught me to read the tide from the color of the water, patiently, in broken English over the engine noise. We anchored off a limestone island where I swam alone for an hour, salt-stung and grinning. Phuket's beaches were beautiful, but that lesson stayed with me longer.
