The journal

I woke before sunrise to walk with monks collecting alms and felt like an intruder in someone else's devotion. The mountain air was cooler than Bangkok's, sharper, and the old city's moat glowed faintly under lantern light that evening. It was the first place in Thailand that asked me to slow down.
