The journal

My taxi driver, a Pakistani man who'd lived there twenty years, pointed out where the desert used to start before the skyline swallowed it. We talked more about his hometown than about Dubai itself. The city's ambition was undeniable, but it was his quiet homesickness that I kept thinking about afterward.
