A Roman palace by the sea

The journal

I drank coffee inside Diocletian's Palace, at a café wedged into what had been a Roman emperor's basement, and realized the waiter serving me lived his whole ordinary life inside a UNESCO site. He seemed unimpressed by the columns. I found that indifference oddly reassuring — history as mere backdrop to a Tuesday shift.
