The journal

The lake here holds the mountains so perfectly still that I kept forgetting which was reflection and which was real. I ate a burger by the water after a day hiking near the Remarkables, legs aching in that satisfied way, and thought this might be the one place I'd happily be stranded in a storm.

Long, scenic alpine lake surrounded by mountains, famous for jet boating, kayaking, and scenic cruises. Best: Dec–Feb

Milford Sound · Fjord

Spectacular fjord with towering waterfalls, rainforests, and dramatic granite cliffs creating breathtaking cruises. Best: Sep–Nov

Arrowtown · Historic town

Charming gold-rush-era village with stunning autumn foliage, artisan shops, cafes, and mountain hiking trails. Best: Mar–May

Glenorchy and Paradise Scenic Drive · Viewpoint

Spectacular route through Lord of the Rings filming locations and alpine landscapes. Best: Nov–Apr
