Student visa & residence permit

MVV (entry visa) + residence permit handled by your institution as recognised sponsor. Financial requirement: €13,000/year (2026). Search-Year (Zoekjaar) visa: 12-month post-study orientation year to find skilled job — converts to Highly Skilled Migrant visa once employed at qualifying salary.

Tax & part-time work

BSN (Burgerservicenummer) needed for everything — get it via Gemeente registration. 30% ruling for incoming skilled migrants (after first job) gives 30% income tax-free for 5 years. Standard tax brackets: 36.97% to €75,518; 49.5% above. Box 3 wealth tax applies if savings exceed thresholds.

Student accommodation

Severe shortage in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft. DUWO and SSH are main student housing organisations — apply 6+ months early. Kamer.nl, Pararius, Funda for private rentals. Borg (deposit) typically 1-2 months' rent.

Healthcare & insurance

Basisverzekering (basic health insurance) mandatory if you work or take Dutch health insurance. International students under 30 with no Dutch employment: private insurance via AON Student Insurance, OOM, or HollandZorg International. Average €40-€60/month.

Language requirements

English-medium programmes: IELTS Academic 6.5+ overall (sometimes 7.0 for English-rich subjects), TOEFL iBT 90+, Cambridge C1+. Dutch language not required for English programmes but learning A2 helps integration enormously.

Food, groceries, dietary

Indian groceries in Amsterdam (Oost), Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven. Lots of South Asian small-grocers. Albert Heijn (most ubiquitous chain) carries broad ethnic range. Cooking essential: €150-€250/month.

Safety & local context

Among world's safest countries; bicycle and tram are universal student transport. Cycling rules are strict — two-way bike lanes mean look both ways. Late-night risk minimal in most cities; Amsterdam canal-belt areas have typical nightlife considerations.

Indian diaspora & community

Strong Indian student communities in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Delft, Rotterdam, Wageningen. Indian Embassy in The Hague + Consulate in Amsterdam. Cricket clubs (KNCB has a national league). Diwali celebrations at Spui Square in The Hague.
