Student visa & residence permit

Fee-paying student visa via Immigration NZ. Acceptance letter from a NZQA-approved institution required. Funds requirement NZD $20,000/year. Post-Study Work visa: 1-3 years depending on level and city (Auckland gets shorter; regional gets longer to encourage decentralisation). Work right during studies: 20 hours/week during term, full-time during scheduled breaks.

Tax & part-time work

IRD number required for any work or bank interest. Personal income tax brackets: 10.5% to NZD $14k, 17.5% to $48k, 30% to $70k, 33% to $180k. Resident withholding tax on bank interest. Most students earning part-time fall in 10.5-17.5% band.

Scholarships specific to this country

New Zealand Aid Programme Scholarships (MFAT-funded, focuses on Pacific + Asia developing countries). NZ Excellence Awards (specifically for Indian students at Auckland, AUT, Otago, Victoria, Massey, Lincoln, Canterbury, Waikato). Student banking & money

Student accommodation

Healthcare & insurance

International students under 6-month courses: full private cover required. 6+ month courses: eligible for publicly-funded healthcare via Ministry of Health enrolment. Most universities require comprehensive insurance regardless — Studentsafe, OrbitProtect are common providers. ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) covers all accident-related care for everyone in NZ.

Language requirements

IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 typical for undergrad (subject-dependent), 6.5+ for postgrad. TOEFL iBT 80-95 common. PTE Academic 50-58. NZCEL accepted at NZQA institutions. Some Pacific Studies and Maori programmes have separate language considerations.

Food, groceries, dietary

Indian groceries available in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch. Halal certification at major chain butchers. Auckland's Sandringham is the cultural hub. Grocery: NZD $80-$120/week.

Among world's safest. Earthquake-prepared infrastructure (especially Wellington, Christchurch) — register on SafeTravel, follow CivilDefence drills. Volcanic areas (North Island geothermal) have specific safety protocols.

Auckland has largest Indian-origin community. Diwali on Aotea Square is a major civic celebration. Indian High Commission in Wellington. Cricket clubs across all cities. Diaspora densest in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga.
