World-class universities (KTH, Lund, Uppsala, Karolinska) with strong research culture. Tuition was free until 2011 for non-EU; now SEK 80,000-180,000/year, but Swedish Institute Scholarships are generous and prestigious.

Student visa & residence permit

Residence permit for studies via Migrationsverket. Financial requirement SEK 10,584/month for 10 months upfront in named bank account. After graduation, 12-month residence permit to find work. Convert to work permit on qualifying employment.

Tax & part-time work

Personnummer (personal identity number) required for everything. Income tax progressive — 32% to SEK 615,300, 52% above. Students earning under SEK 24,000 effectively tax-free. Skatteverket is the tax authority.

Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP) — fully-funded master's, ~350 awards/year, India one of top recipient countries. Visby Programme for Russia/Eastern partnership. University-specific: KTH Tuition Fee Scholarships, Lund Global, Uppsala IPK.

Student banking & money

SEB, Swedbank, Nordea, Handelsbanken. SEB and Swedbank most welcoming to non-personnummer holders initially. BankID is essential — once you get personnummer, install BankID immediately for digital signing.

Student accommodation

Severe shortage in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, Uppsala. SSSB (Stockholm), AF Bostäder (Lund), Stiftelsen Göteborgs Studentbostäder (Gothenburg) — apply 12-18 months before arrival. Blocket and Bostadsförmedlingen for private. First-hand contracts (förstahand) coveted; second-hand (andrahand) more accessible.

Healthcare & insurance

Resident-permit holders get Swedish public healthcare access — minimal copay (SEK 200-400/visit). Patientförsäkring covers treatment-related complications. Apoteket pharmacies state-regulated.

Language requirements

English-medium master's widespread — IELTS 6.5+/TOEFL iBT 90+. Swedish A2 helps daily life enormously even in Stockholm. SFI (Svenska för invandrare) is free Swedish language for residents.

Food, groceries, dietary

Indian groceries in Stockholm (Tensta, Rinkeby), Gothenburg, Malmö. ICA, Coop, Hemköp chains. Cooking essential: SEK 2,500-3,500/month. Restaurant meals SEK 100-180.

Safety & local context

Stockholm and Gothenburg have specific neighbourhood considerations late at night (Husby, Tensta). University districts are uniformly safe. Reflective gear in winter (long darkness) is more critical than people from sunny climates expect.
