Estonia banking access
How to open a bank account in Estonia — documentation, timelines, top banks, fintech alternatives, and current 2024-26 regulatory landscape.
Currency
EUR
Typical timeline
14-30 days (most banks require in-person presence)
Min deposit
EUR 0-200 (LHV minimal, Swedbank standard)
FATF status
White-list, post-Danske reforms intensive 2018-2020
Difficulty for foreigners
Difficult after 2018 — historical e-Residency banking ease ended after Danske Bank scandal; LHV the practical option for non-residents now
Banking landscape
| Top traditional banks | Swedbank Estonia, SEB Estonia, LHV Pank, Coop Pank, Luminor Estonia |
| Fintech alternatives | Wise (Estonia-headquartered, full IBAN), Revolut Estonia, N26 Estonia, EnterCard, Tuum (banking-as-a-service) |
| Multi-currency support | Standard EU — EUR primary, USD/GBP at major banks; Wise gives access to 50+ currencies |
| MSME credit access | Modest — KredEx state-backed SME loans, EU structural funds for innovation; banks cautious lending to e-Residency-only companies without local presence |
| KYC standard | Very strict post-2018 Danske scandal — even for e-Residents, banks now require physical presence + Estonian business connection |
| CRS status | Active since 2017 |
Documentation needed
Passport + Estonian e-Residency or D-visa + Estonian business activity proof (most banks won't open accounts purely on e-Residency anymore) + economic-connection proof + source of funds
Recent changes (2023-2026)
2024: Coop Pank reopened to e-Residents on case-by-case basis. LHV remains most accessible. Tuum (banking-as-a-service) and EnterCard expanded fintech alternatives. EU AMLR (Anti-Money Laundering Regulation 2024) sets harmonized standards; Estonia banks raised onboarding bar.
Strengths
- EU member with full IBAN reach across SEPA zone
- Wise headquartered in Estonia — fintech-friendly regulatory environment
- e-Residency provides digital identity for remote signing of bank documents
- LHV among Europe's digital-native banks
- Strong cybersecurity infrastructure (post-2007 Russian cyberattacks)
Drawbacks
- Major hurdle: most banks require physical presence + Estonian business connection
- e-Residency alone is NOT enough for most banks (changed 2018 post-Danske)
- KYC strictest in EU due to historical money-laundering vulnerabilities
- Many e-Residents end up using Wise/Revolut instead of traditional banks
