Mundra Port handles approximately 7-8 million TEU plus very substantial bulk and liquid cargo, making it the largest commercial port in India by total tonnage. The port was developed by Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd from the late 1990s onwards on land reclaimed and developed by the operator, and it now operates under a long-term concession from the Government of Gujarat. Mundra includes container terminals (including the Adani International Container Terminal in joint venture with MSC and CMA CGM), bulk berths, liquid berths and a multi-product Special Economic Zone.
Mundra serves direct deepsea container services to Europe, Mediterranean, North America East Coast, Far East and the Middle East. The port's natural deep draft allows it to handle the largest container ships at full load, which is a structural advantage over older Indian ports where capital dredging is required. Bulk handling at Mundra includes coal, fertiliser raw materials, edible oils, industrial chemicals and grain. The on-port SEZ — Mundra SEZ — supports light manufacturing, pharma, textiles and food processing for re-export.
Mundra's hinterland is principally Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, with road connectivity via the Mundra-Adipur-Gandhidham national highway network and rail connectivity via the Adani Logistics network and the Indian Railways. The Western DFC reaches a connection at Pirpiala, providing dedicated freight access to Mundra. Adani Logistics operates Inland Container Depots and Container Freight Stations at multiple locations including Kishangarh, Patli (NCR) and Kanech (Ludhiana) to serve container origin and destination flows.
Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd is the dominant operator. Customs operations are run through ICEGATE with the standard risk-based clearance, AEO access, and EDI document submission. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board, Plant Quarantine, FSSAI and other agencies operate at the port for sector-specific clearances. The Mundra SEZ provides duty-free import for raw materials destined for re-export production, plus a range of state-level industrial incentives administered by GIDC.
For Indian exporters and importers, Mundra is the alternative or complement to JNPA for Western and Northern India. Many shippers split their volume between JNPA and Mundra to diversify carrier choice and reduce exposure to congestion at any single port. Mundra's deep draft, larger container terminal capacity and proximity to the petrochemical and refinery complexes of Gujarat make it especially attractive for chemicals, refined products, and bulk cargo movement. Adani-operated logistics services provide door-to-door integration with Indian inland points, reducing the coordination burden on shippers.
